About Technical Ceramics and their Excellent Mechanical, Electrical and Thermal Properties

The term 'technical ceramics' (or 'engineering ceramics') refers to a broad range of advanced ceramic materials developed for their excellent mechanical, electrical and thermal properties.

Technical ceramic materials feature hardness, physical stability, extreme heat resistance, chemical inertness, biocompatibility and superior electrical properties. As such, they are highly resistant to melting, bending, stretching, corrosion and wear.

Precision-engineered ceramic components are used by design engineers in a wide range of specialist applications from aerospace and semiconductor, electronics, medical, automotive, thermal processing, industrial equipment, defence and security, power generation and distribution and domestic products.

Some technical ceramics are referred to as electro-ceramics because of their special electrical properties. This group includes piezoelectric ceramics and dielectric ceramics.

Piezoelectric ceramics, such as Lead Zirconium Titanate (PZT), have the ability to convert mechanical energy into an electrical energy and vice versa. This 'piezoelectric effect' can be harnessed and used in a wide variety of sensors used in measurement and monitoring applications, energy harvesting and specialist ultrasonic cleaning.

Dielectric ceramics exhibit low electrical loss, but have high dielectric permittivity. They are used in electrical applications such as capacitors and resonators, over a wide range of frequency bands and power ratings. Typical markets are telecoms (GPS, base stations, antennae), medical and lasers (pulse power sources).

Importantly, today's advanced ceramic materials also lend themselves to mass production, offering a cost-effective engineering solution to a wide range of design challenges.

Morgan Technical Ceramics has built a global business on its expertise in materials engineering and component manufacture. The company is at the forefront of ceramic development and application. Its specialist molding, machining, brazing and coating facilities around the world produce precision-engineered parts in high volume or small production runs according to customer needs.
